"This technology should change they way people record rehearsals..." - an interview with Gene Torres10/31/2016 ZYLIA Team: Gene, can you tell us a few words about you and your music passions? Gene Torres: I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and at 15 years old, after my friends and I decided to start a band. I choose the bass guitar. In the beginning, I was only playing R&B and Soul music but I got turned on to Funk, Jazz, Brazilian, Salsa, Rock, Haitian & African Music. In NYC you can work more if your musical vocabulary is wide. ![]() The theory behind that was the more styles you learned the more you can work. If you only know one style then you only earn 1 style of income. Now mind you I’m not a specialist on any of the styles previously mentioned but I know enough to hold my own. Then came Theory Lessons and Ear Training lessons up to today I’m still studying Theory and Ear Training. Z: You are following us since from the beginning:-) What was so interesting for you about our product? G: As soon as I saw the web page, I knew due to the breakthrough in some of the other companies like Celomony’s Melodyne, Propellerheads Recycle, iZotope’s RX. It was just going to be a matter of time before recording audio was going to change. ZYLIA is leading the way for multitrack recording. Z: Why did you decide to volunteer for beta tests? G: Technology has always been something I’ve enjoyed and curiosity about why things work and how they work. At one point any product that I bought for my musical career, was opened and taken apart to see what was in it. And, NO, I didn’t open the ZM-1, lol !! Z: In what conditions are you testing ZYLIA? What is your first impression? G: I’m testing the ZM-1 in actual rehearsals (3 and counting) and It was brought to 1 gig to try. My 1st Impression is that it works, and it works great. Now mind you these tests are not under controlled situations and there is a lot of trial and error on my part. But the bottom line is that if you follow ZYLIA ZM-1 guidelines you will have a really good recording. Z: Do you find this technology useful? Is it solving any of your problems?
G: Yes it solves the idea of having a multitrack recording (without spending 2 hours beforehand sitting up all the mic’s for a multitrack) so for example you wanted to hear one singer's part over another singer's part cause you’re not sure if their parts work, now you're able to isolate the parts to hear who’s doing what. Z: In general, what do you think about this technology and ZYLIA Portable Recording Studio? G: The technology should change they way people record rehearsals or anything for that matter. I can’t wait for the ZM-1 to be released on the market. I hope to be one of the 1st to have one when its released!! Z: Can you recommend it? G: Yes, I've had a few musician/producer friends call me to ask about it. Some questioned me on Facebook. They were amazed by what it does and the possibilities going forward!!

By Piotr Makaruk How it is usually done - studio session recording ... These days music production is faster than ever. Through years recording process has been moving from analogue to digital domain. As the answer to this shift quite a big spectrum of available DAW software appears. They offer a rich amount of tools for track editing and music arrangements. It is a great progress in music editing. Musicians are allowed to rework their technical skills using advanced software, to correct their mistakes, play with amount of quantization or rearrange a whole song with different groove. The methodology of music recording has changed and this advanced software treatments applied to sound are becoming standard procedure. Technology is blissful and allows amateurs as well as professionals creating great music pieces on their computers. This form of music creation could be perceived as a rather conceptually-oriented, because production process highly contributes to the final sound. How it was done - live studio session recording ... Some great albums such as the first album of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin debut were recorded during a live studio session. Musicians used to play song together and recorded songs simultaneously. These records are familiar from the fact, that they were mixed and mastered incredibly fast within tens of hours immediately after recording. For example Led Zeppelin I album was characterized by unforgettable and unique dose of expression, with interesting natural balanced room ambiance, although final record contains some crosstalks and notable leakages on the vocals recordings. However, all these imperfections were admitted to had been done intentionally by the authors. Experimental setups of microphones were highly contributing to the phenomenal sound. Maybe live sessions recording approach is worth to reconsider once again in light of new promising technology? Is it always worth to record each track separately? Coming back to live studio session recording with the new technology... ZYLIA Portable Recording Studio comes with a new approach dedicated for music recording. It allows casual users for live studio recording in easier way than it was ever done before. This single recording device offers studio capabilities with no necessity of applying excessive recording equipment. Multiple microphones setup and reflection filters are substituted with a single device. Up till now live studio session recording approach required well equipped studio or rehearsal room with an acoustic adaptation. Often musicians were partially separated from each other losing their emotional connection. The advantage of proposed solution is ease of use. ZYLIA is connected via USB cable to your laptop and does not require additional power supply. Moreover advanced technology inside of ZYLIA helps to save some space in a rehearsal room and offers a big freedom in instruments setup. By putting it in the middle of music scene, ZYLIA offers more spatial freedom in a rehearsal room setup making it a quite natural and comfortable for musicians. After initial recording is made, in order to localize each of the sources correctly in space, live studio session can be performed. After recording and processing a significantly enhanced sound of each instrument could be mixed in your favorite DAW software with additional effects applied. Moreover, it handles well acoustic imperfections present in a rehearsal room. The huge advantage of such solution is mobility. Musicians can take ZYLIA in an inspiring place and create music outside of the studio environment recording not only their music but also surrounding world. Why not to take several ZYLIA devices and experiment a little bit with several setups during the same record live session like it was done during Led Zeppelin album? Advanced technology in ZM-1 would allow to record rehearsals and highlight each instrument mapping it on audio clip like if they were recorded separately. When the most important thing is already done and song is recorded, a quick editing will be required before presenting a song further to wider audience.
Conclusions ... Finally, I would recommend this device to every musician who is looking for new ways of musical expression, bands who feel more comfortable during a live recording as well as artists who discover sounds through experimental approach. Classical and timeless albums prove that a real eye-to-eye contact between band members during recording creates something which could not be repeated in track by track recording approach. Thanks to ZYLIA device a live studio session recording would be much easier than it has ever been before. It opens a new field for people who would like to experiment with sound and music. This time we recorded our friends in so cold "old-school" way, a la a single mic technique, but with multi track ZYLIA ZM-1. Results are very nice. You can do a lot with it and using your imagination you can do even more:-)
Save your money and time ZYLIA gives you a possibility to record your rehearsals in an easy way. You do not need to spend a lot of money for a full microphone setup. This can be very expensive and you need to know basic stuff about recording equipment. With ZYLIA all you need is a free spot in the middle of a room and passion for playing. This photo tells everything:-) Thank you Uwe Bossert for testing ZYLIA ZM-1 and your feedback!
This picture was taken in Achtung Music Studios. For many musicians recording of their performance is a very obvious thing. For many it is too difficult. Some of them simply is a bit too lazy for that:-) But why you should record your rehearsals? 1. Hear it all In many cases you simply do not hear everything when playing with your band. Music can be too loud to catch every tone. You are also very focused on your performance and you do not notice every detail. This is absolutely normal thing. Recording of your rehearsals can help you in identifying parts which need more work. 2. Track your progress By listening to recordings made within longer period of time with your band you can easily track your progress. This is always very motivating moment. 3. Be critical It is easier to assess your recording and judge the choice of tone for a particular song. Sometimes instruments do not go well together and you are able to hear it only by listening to recordings. You can adjust tone and check if that works out better. 4. Save good ideas Jam sessions are great, full of passion and great ideas…. but, in many cases you simply forget what you have played. You lose good pieces and this is very frustrating. If you record your sessions you can always go back to your good ideas. Recording can be complicated, if you use microphones to pick up either the room, or individual instruments and vocals, and you also need an interface and a computer that will convert your sound to a digital format.
Forget about those problems. ZYLIA ZM-1 gives you a great possibility to record your rehearsal in an easy way only with one multi tract microphone. It enables new post-processing effects such as individual sound sources separation. This technology isolates every instrument from your music piece and saves it to preserve every moment. Try it out, record your rehearsals and help yourself improve! Be professional. Guess what!... SLEDZIUHA and Kaha made some great noise in Zylia rehearsal room. We recorded them with ZYLIA ZM-1 and took some pictures:-) By the way, we keep our fingers crossed for your performance in Mam Talent TVN.
We had a pleasure to host a group of young musicians in Zylia office. They played nice music and made recordings with ZYLIA ZM-1 microphone. Thank you for good time spend together and your feedback (Marcin Mańka and young students of Primary School in Dopiewo)!
